The Nitrogen Cycle
- Fish produce Ammonia (NH3 is Nitrogen + Hydrogen) from their gills, and poo and pee.
- Nitrosomonas bacteria breaks down the wastes from the fish, by converting Ammonia into Nitrites.
- Nitrites are then converted into Nitrates by Nitrobacter bacteria
- The plants absorb the nitrates as plant food
- The water is now clean and returned to the fish
