We are in a record setting string of over 100 degree days, some as hot as 106 officially. We all know the records are not as hot as what we see locally. I’ve seen on my thermometer and Facebook locally 111 degrees. We even set a record high for the lowest temp of the day at 86 degrees.
The heat is cooking my biggest plants. They fall over and dry out. Roots seem fine and the other plants seem happy, so it must be the heat.
To test my theory I bought a free standing patio umbrella and stand and placed it so it would shade various parts of the troughs during the day. It seemed to help.
I keep reading that the fish like the dark and cool, even warm water fish. Well I painted my IBC fish tank (URL LINK) a deep forest green and topped it with a slatted cedar lid, with shade cloth on the underside. That made it shady in the tank but not deep shade.
I rigged a blue tarp over the fish tank. It does give a deeper shade and hopefully will help keep the water temperature cooler too! I’m seeing 82-94 degree water in the fish tank. If it gets any hotter I won’t have to cook the fish before I eat them!
Must be wearing sun block!
Here are some of my plants that are surviving. I think this is amazing! Nothing likes it outdoors in July and August! and these little guys have sprouted and are growing.
